The women who came before us knew how to endure.
They navigated limited options, rigid expectations, and roles that didn’t always allow room for reinvention. Many stayed because they had to. Many sacrificed because there weren’t alternatives.
This article is part of my Still Writing the Story Women’s History Month series exploring midlife reinvention, career clarity, and the courage to design the next chapter.
They knew responsibility.
They knew perseverance.
They knew how to carry a lot without complaint.
And because of them, our lives look different.
But here’s the truth:
They mastered endurance.
We are mastering discernment.
There’s a difference.
Endurance says:
“Keep going.”
Discernment asks:
“Is this still right?”
Many of us inherited expectations about work, marriage, loyalty, sacrifice, success. Some of those still fit. Some don’t.
Midlife is often when we quietly realize:
I don’t want to endure this anymore.
I want to choose differently.
That’s not rebellion.
That’s evolution.
As Maya Angelou once said:
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
The women before us did the best they could with what they had.
Now we know more.
We can choose more.
And that might be the most honoring thing we can do.
Reflection
Pause for a moment.
Where in your life are you enduring something that actually requires discernment?
What belief about success or sacrifice did you inherit that may not fit who you are now?
If you trusted your clarity more than tradition, what would shift?
If this feels uncomfortable — good.
That means something is surfacing.
For Women’s History Month, I created the Next Chapter Activation Guide to help you name what you’ve inherited — and what you’re ready to rewrite.
If you want it, reply CHAPTER to my email.
And if what’s surfacing feels bigger than journaling, that’s exactly what we unpack in a Find Your Fizz conversation.
